Vanlife with Pets | Take Care of Your Furry Friends on the Road

How do I take care of my pet when I’m living in a van?

Welcoming a pet into the family is a huge responsibility. Welcoming them into a van life family is an even bigger responsibility, and can be downright dangerous if done incorrectly.

I’d recommend that if you want to have any pets, you are a remote worker (or can bring your pet to work). You would also likely want to only stay in places with a lot of space. City life is not ideal.

Dogs

Dogs might be the easiest animal to have as a pet if you’re a boondocker. If you live the city life, it may be very difficult. Dogs make an incredible security system, but you can’t leave them in your van on a hot day without worry. You really shouldn’t be leaving them anywhere. Only commit to a pup if you can guarantee you’ll take them essentially everywhere with you for the next 15 years.

Cats

A lot of vanlifers worry about having cats. The smell alone is concerning. No need to fret though, lots of people travel with their kitties! Just like everything else in van life, you just have to learn the right way to do it!

Make sure your cat enjoys travel
If your pal doesn’t like car rides, runs away outdoors, and hates walks, it is better to leave them in a home-life. Just like people, all creatures are either made for this or not; an unfortunate reality.

POTTY TIME!

Clean up after your pets. We shouldn’t have to remind people, but here we are. Also, clean your litter box daily. You’ll want to be 10x cleaner in a van than in normal daily life.
