Community & Relationships Ins & Outs of Van Life

Van Life Etiquette

The van life community is one of few rules. We don’t like to be told what to do, follow-the-beat-of-our-own-drum type of lifestyle. While some rules are meant to be broken, there are some important bylaws that allow us to keep this lifestyle thriving.

Whether you’re a newbie or have been a roadwarrior for as long as you can remember, it’s important to keep Van Life Etiquette in mind at all times! If we want to continue living this lifestyle, we can’t destroy our surroundings & make a bad name for ourselves and future travelers.

The list of unspoken rules that all van lifers should be sure to follow.

Know the laws in your area.

If it’s illegal to live in a van, you should move elsewhere. No arguments, you’re just going to wrack up tickets.

No trash dumping.

Only throw your trash in designated areas. Gas stations are a great last resort.

Privacy

Parking near other dwellers? Leave AT LEAST one spot between you and other campers.
If you plan to turn on something loud, such as a fan/alternator, or watch something then park far away as to not disturb others. Don’t go knocking on random doors, or peeking in. It’s just hella rude. You wouldn’t do that to someone’s house, and if you did, they’d likely call the police on you.

Find a great parking spot.

Respect other van lifers’ privacy.
That’s not to say you need to avoid them. Don’t be scared to strike up a conversation with fellow van lifers or even leave a note with your contact information, leaving the ball in their court. A good sign is, if the doors are open, you are free to carefully, kindly, and respectfully approach and say “Howdy do neighbor?!”

Leave no trace:

Make sure you leave everything better than how you found it. A good example is picking up trash you see left behind. Some people will leave cut wood for the next persons’ campfire. The world is a better place when we take small actions. Check out Leave No Trace

Be Environmentally Conscious:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. There are 2 ways to van life. Use a bunch of disposable crap and further destroy the planet, or have the things you need & can reuse & be self-sufficient. Be the second guy. It’s a lot cheaper in the long run.
More ways to be environmentally conscious… <coming soon>

Use Correct Turn-Of-Phrase

Calling yourself a gypsy is offensive unless you are in fact, of that descent. Educate yourself.
