Ins & Outs of Van Life

Van Life Misconceptions

Vanlifers are homeless people (Synonymous)

False. Vanlifers are houseless, sometimes. Sometimes vanlifers have a physical house and choose to spend their time traveling in a van. Vanlifers are not inherently homeless, but homeless people can be vanlifers.

Understand that a lot of this has to do with how one represents themselves or what these people have experienced in the past. It’s important that we all keep up appearances & leave behind a good name for vanlifers everywhere we go. Every interaction you have will affect how that person views vanlifers as a group. Make sure you leave a good taste in their mouth. The more people someone personally knows that are enjoying this lifestyle, the more likely they are to be kind and excited when they meet a new vanlifer.

“Where you live” is just where you lay your head at night. It’s a made-up concept. Where I live is where I spend my waking hours. I can lay my head anywhere. Might as well have a great view.

Why People Get Into Van Life

Once again, many vanlifers didn’t start off homeless.
Personally, I started because of the cost. I saved a great deal of money and had extra money I wouldn’t have had if I was paying rent somewhere. I was doing this so I could save money and get ahead in life.

You have to sacrifice in life if you want to get ahead in life. That’s what I have learned. You never know when hardship may hit and having these survival skills in your pocket may just save your life one day.

I feel this journey adds more to my life because I can work less and save more. It’s a win-win. A lot of people love the portability and nomadic life.
